OSPP Award of the EGU 2024 for Hannah Meyer
Hannah Meyer, PhD student in the Helmholtz Young Investigator Group "Mineral Dust" at IMKTRO, received the Outstanding Student and PhD candidate Presentation (OSPP) Award at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2024 in Vienna, Austria. The award recognizes outstanding presentations by early-career researchers.
Hannah Meyer's presentation, entitled "Abundance of giant mineral dust particles: Insights from measured emitted dust size distributions during the J-WADI campaign", focused on the particle size distribution of mineral dust at emission using data collected in the Jordan Wind Erosion and Dust Investigation (J-WADI, https://www.imk-tro.kit.edu/11800.php) campaign conducted north of Wadi Rum, Jordan, in September 2022.
Using a variety of aerosol spectrometers, the study analyzed dust particles directly after their emission ranging in diameter from 0.4 to 200 μm, revealing a mass concentration peak at a size of about 30 μm and detecting giant dust particles (particle diameter d > 62.5 μm) during active dust emission. This work aims to improve the understanding of super-coarse (10 < d ≤ 62.5 μm) and giant dust particles, which are not yet understood, but are essential for advancing our knowledge of the interactions of mineral dust with weather and climate.
Congratulations to Hannah on winning this award!
