About IMKTRO

IMK Building, Campus North

Physik Tower, Campus South

The Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research Tropospheric Research (IMKTRO) is - alongside IMKAAF, IMKASF and IMKIFU - one of the four institutes for meteorology and climate research at KIT.

Both IMKTRO and IMKASF have been operated jointly by the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe and the University of Karlsruhe for more than two decades. They can therefore be regarded as the nucleus of the merger of the research center and the university to form the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

IMKTRO conducts fundamental research into weather systems, boundary layer meteorology, cloud physics, trace substance households, climate and weather-related hazards. The university lecturers are active in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs “Meteorology and Climate Physics”.

The institute participates in the KIT centers “Climate and Environment” and “MathSEE” and contributes significantly to the program topic “Atmosphere under Global Change” of the Helmholtz Association in the research area “Earth and Environment”.

Valuing diversity at IMKTRO

IMKTRO is characterized by the great diversity of the people who work, study, teach and research here. Creating equal opportunities and appreciating diversity contributes significantly to the success of the institute in research and teaching and helps attract talented, creative and committed people and utilize their potential.

Therefore, the equal participation of all members of the institute is one of the institute's fundamental principles, regardless of aspects such as age, disability or health impairment, gender and sexual orientation, social background and socio-familial situation, nationality and ethnicity as well as religion and ideology.

We want to self-critically recognize, reflect on and dismantle possible mechanisms of exclusion that stand in the way of this. To initiate this development, we carried out a project funded by the Excellence Initiative at KIT in 2023. Specifically, we created contact points, established a diversity network of employees and promoted awareness through further training and lively discussion in order to empower every single person at IMKTRO to recognize and counteract discrimination. This creates and maintains an appreciative, recognizing, open and respectful culture.

Further information on the topic of diversity at IMKTRO on the intranet will follow soon .

Sustainability at IMKTRO

In line with KIT's mission on sustainability, we at IMKTRO are committed to social and ecological sustainability in the sense of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

With our scientific focus on meteorology and climate research, we not only contribute to a better understanding of climate change, but also try to make this research as climate and environmentally friendly as possible.

To achieve this goal, a “Sustainability” working group has been formed at IMKTRO to further advance the topic at the institute. To this end, information is collected in topic areas such as energy consumption, consumption and nutrition, as well as business travel and commuting, and measures are derived from this in order to anchor the topic in the awareness of employees and promote the change towards more sustainable working.

Further information on the topic of sustainability at IMKTRO on the intranet will follow soon.
