Open doctoral student position on the impact of mineral dust on cloud formation
We are inviting applications for an open PhD student position at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research - Department Troposphere Research (IMK-TRO). As a part of the Helmholtz Young Investigator Group "Mineral Dust", we are offering:
A 3-year position for a doctoral student (75%, TV-L E13) with a Master degree in meteorology or physics, or a comparable qualification, ideally with programming skills. Previous experience in the fields of cloud physics, mineral dust/aerosol research, numerical modeling and/or laboratory experiments will be advantageous.
The doctoral student will investigate the impact of large mineral dust particles on cloud formation. She/he is expected to conduct laboratory experiments on ice nucleation using available dust field samples. She/he will also have the opportunity to participate in an international field campaign to collect additional samples. Using experimental data, theoretical understanding, and numerical modeling, she/he will study dust-induced heterogeneous ice nucleation and its dependence on dust particle size and composition. The successful candidate will advance existing parameterizations on dust-cloud interactions and implement and test the parameterizations in the ICON-ART modeling system.
